Foundations of Academic Literacy

writing

The Foundations of Academic Literacy (FAL) course has been designed to support and empower new and returning SFU students who want or need to become more comfortable and confident in their academic literacy skills. Developed in support of the new University Undergraduate Curriculum initiative, FAL X99 will help students become effective writers, problem-solvers, thinkers and learners. The course will also prepare students to be successful in meeting the requirements of designated W courses.

Academic literacy is about more than reading effectively and writing well. Students in FAL X99 work independently and in small groups to express their ideas, and those of others, through written and oral academic literacy; gain confidence in their ability to take on further studies; to explore and present their ideas in the forms and for the purposes that are typical of a variety of academic disciplines; to apply the knowledge they gain in the FAL X99 course to the discipline-specific practices of their on-going studies; and to receive constructive feedback on their writing.

FAL X99 students are encouraged to attend writing and learning skills workshops offered through the Student Learning Commons.

This web site will continue to evolve as the program develops, so check back often to see what's new in FAL.
