The Professional Development Program at SFU currently supports 28 student cohorts or modules that are led by instructional teams comprised of Faculty members, Faculty Associates, and Coordinators. These modules are based in Burnaby, Surrey, and Maple Ridge. Typically these modules host 16 - 32 students and are engaged in philosophical and pedagogical discussions around the implementation of the BC K-12 Curriculum. In addition, modules have the flexibility to reflect the theoretical interests and strengths of the current instructional team.
PDP Modules

FALL INTAKE (September)
Burnaby Community
This is an Elementary (K-7) module whose placements will be within the Burnaby School District. Burnaby is composed of 41 Elementary schools and this Module will be hosted at one of Burnaby's newest Elementary school, University Highlands. University Highlands in located adjacent Simon Fraser Univeristy and is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold building, the first of its kind in British Columbia.
Creative Collaborative Communities Module
The Creative Collaborative Communities Module (C3) is composed of K-12 student teachers and is located at the SFU Surrey Campus. Students in this Module have learning opportunities that integrate the arts and technology in teaching theory and practice, as well as demonstrate an interest in creatively and collaboratively connecting with the learning community of schools within the Surrey School district.
Diversity In The Urban Classroom
This Diversity in the Urban Classroom Module (DUC) is a partnership between the Surrey School District and the Faculty of Education at the SFU Surrey Campus. The module is unique in providing a school-based teaching and learning experience for elementary and secondary student teachers in diverse and urban neighbourhoods in North Surrey. A module theme is to contribute and learn from the cultures of these schools and the community. Student teachers will have the experience of learning theoretically and practically in a variety of K-12 schools and teacher mentoring experiences.
Fine & Performing Arts (FPA)
This K-12 module is located at the SFU Burnaby campus. Secondary level applicants must satisfy the academic requirements for a major or minor(s) in an Arts area (Music, Art, Theatre/Drama, Dance). Elementary level applicants should demonstrate an interest in the Arts through experience or instruction (e.g. music/dance lessons, extracurricular activities).
French Module - Burnaby
The French Module of the Professional Development Program prepares you for teaching at the elementary or secondary level in Core French, French Immersion and Programme francophone. Student Teachers in this module are generally students who attended French Immersion programs, studied French at an advanced level or lived in a French environment. The goals, values, academic components and evaluation criteria are the same as all other modules, however, the French module focuses on issues specific to teaching French and teaching subjects in French in B.C. - Studies or practicum in a francophone environment (national and international)
- Explore, 5-week French Language program at Laval University

International Teacher Education Module (ITEM)
The ITEM module focuses on the theme of “internationalization” of education. Student teachers will examine the issues and challenges for teachers and students in BC schools where diversity, global education, English-as-an-additional-language and intercultural communication have become critical and integral components of classroom life and the curriculum. Maple Ridge / Mission Module
This Module is composed of K - 12 student teachers. It is an off-campus Module located at Fairview Elementary in Maple Ridge (School District 42). Students complete their practicums within Maple Ridge, Mission and the Tri-Cities.
Pathways
The Pathways Module is a Burnaby Campus Module composed of K - 12 student teachers. This Module believes that 'pathways' play an important role in teaching and learning. Students will learn about their own pathways of their professional development as well as the pathways of learning each will create for their students.
Playworks
This K-12 module is located at the SFU Burnaby campus. The Module focuses on 'play' based learning with Physical Education being the foci. Secondary students will most likely hold PE major/minor accompanied by another teachable major or minor. Elementary applicants interested in PE should provide information in their PDP application to support an interest in this module (e.g. coaching experience, fitness instructor certificate).
Vancouver Community Module
This Module has student teachers from K - 12 and is based at the Burnaby Campus. Placements are made with the Vancouver School District as well as West Vancouver, North Vancouver and Richmond.

French Module - Surrey

The Indigenous Perspectives Teacher Education Module (IPTEM) is a cohort which addresses two pressing issues in education today - to increase the number of First Nations / Aboriginal teachers in British Columbia, and to augment the knowledge, skills, and understandings of non-Indigenous people teaching and working with First Nations / Aboriginal children and youth. We invite indigenous peoples (First Nations, Aboriginal, Métis) and non-indigenous people with an interest in First Nations / Aboriginal perspectives in education to select IPTEM when applying to the Professional Development Program.
In addition to the teacher education focus common to all PDP modules, IPTEM will explore many of the Aboriginal issues in education, incorporating indigenous knowledge and cultural resources available in the environment of the Musqueum, Sto:lo and Squamish peoples, as well as resources available in aboriginal communities residing in metropolitan centers.
The next cohort will begin January 2012. When completing the PDP online application, please indicate your interest in this module. Applicants to the IPTEM must provide a cover letter. This letter will help the Admissions Committee determine a student’s eligibility for this program.

Lifework
This is a K-12 Module that is located off-campus at Hazel Trembath Elementary located within the Coquitlam School District. The emphasis of this Module is on social justice (e.g. human/children's rights, global education, racism education, multicultural interests, gender studies). Typically students will have placements in the Tri-City area.
Literacy In The Urban Classroom (LUC)
Literacy in the Urban Classroom is a K-7 module located at the SFU Surrey campus. This module addresses literacies for a culturally and linguistically diverse group of learners across all content areas. Student teachers will explore and build on these themes in collaboration with teachers in the Surrey School District.
Secondary
This is a Secondary (8-12) Module based at the SFU Burnaby Campus. Student teachers focus on developing their pedagogical skills designed specifically for a Secondary school enviornment. The Module is composed of 32 student teachers with varying subject area specialties.
SEEDS (Global Communities)
This is a K-12 Burnaby Campus Module who focus is on environmental ethics and social justice (e.g. environmental interests, community involvement, social justice interests, multicultural organizations). Student teachers who apply to this Module have the option to complete an Enviornmental Education minor.
