SSHRC Bora Laskin National Fellowship in Human Rights Research

The purpose of this fellowship is to support research, preferably of a multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary nature, and to develop Canadian expertise in the field of human rights, with emphasis on themes and issues relevant to the Canadian human rights scene.

Thérèse F. Casgrain Fellowship

This fellowship supports research in the field of social justice, particularly in defence of individual rights and the promotion of the economic and social interests of Canadian women. The Foundation is particularly interested in research that includes a discussion of public policy options and makes concrete recommendations for change.

SFU Conference Funding
Purpose: Financial assistance from the VP Academic for conferences sponsored by SFU or by its faculty, and in some cases for conferences in which there is either substantial participation by or partnership with SFU co-sponsors

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF)
Purpose: NPRP is an annual program that addresses both national and global research needs to pursue opportunities for which Qatar may have a comparative advantage. The program funds original, competitively selected research in natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical and health sciences, agricultural sciences, social sciences and humanities (including education). Investigators would be required to partner with researchers in Qatar, and at least 50% of the research must be conducted by the research team in Qatar.
Deadline: Letters of Intent due October 15, 2009, Final Proposals due January 14, 2010
Amount: US$20,000 up to a maximum of $350,000 per proposal, per year, for research projects of one, two or three years

Trudeau Fellowships

Trudeau Fellows are chosen above all because they have proven that they can imagine and promote new solutions to major contemporary issues, relying on both the knowledge they have drawn from leading-edge research and the conscientious attention they pay to the needs of our society. The Foundation considers candidates from all disciplines in the social sciences and humanities and all domains of creative arts and focuses its efforts in four fields – human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, and people and their natural environment.

As of fall 2008, the Foundation started requesting additional nominations for a “Visiting Trudeau Fellowship,” given to an international (uneven year) or national (even year) Visiting Fellow who will be invited to reside at a Canadian University for at least one year during his or her mandate.

Fulbright New Century Scholars Program

Thirty top academics and professionals from the U.S. and abroad collaborate for a year on a topic of global significance. The New Century Scholar theme for 2009-2010 is "The University as Innovation Driver and Knowledge Center". The program description for 2010-2011 is to be determined.

Molson Prizes

Two prizes of $50,000 each are awarded annually to distinguished Canadians, one in the arts and the other in the social sciences and humanities. The Molson Prizes encourage Canadians honoured with this distinction to continue contributing to the cultural and intellectual heritage of Canada. The Canada Council administers the awards in conjunction with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and assumes responsibility for choosing the winners.

CUFA BC Distinguished Academics Awards

Academic of the Year Award - For a specific and recent outstanding contribution to the community beyond the academy through research or other scholarly activity by an individual or group at any stage of their career. A recent contribution would typically be within the past three years.

Paz Buttedahl Career Achievement Award - Named in memory of Dr. Paz Buttedahl – academic, community builder and faculty association leader – this award is for sustained outstanding contributions to the community beyond the academy through research or other scholarly activities by an individual or a group over the major portion of their career.
