Summer Programme Costs and Commitments

There is no cost to this programme for parents other than the cost for parking in the SFU parking lot ($1.50/hour) when parents plan to stay at SFU for the hour that their children attend the programme. Although there is no fee for the programme, we ask that parents make a commitment to

Attending the programme daily. The CSC summer programme includes a credit granting course for SFU undergraduate students (Education 424) and for graduate students (Education 864). When a child does not attend, a very difficult situation is created for the SFU students. Family vacations, therefore, will need to be scheduled for either before July 4 or after July 22nd. The SFU student has only 15 days with the child that they tutor, and each day is critical. Even a few days missing will make it difficult for the SFU student to complete the course satisfactorily. For children enrolled in the CSC research project, it is very important that they attend or the graduate students will not have sufficient data to complete their research projects.

Bringing their children for research-related testing at SFU. To help us with the research component of the programme, we will phone and ask parents of children selected for our studies to bring them to SFU for testing (approximately 60 minutes) at a scheduled time. This will also help us determine whether the children will benefit from the programme. Results of the research testing will be kept confidential and will not be shared with SFU students, parents, or teachers. For children who have attended our programme in past, we may need to retest again this year, however, the session will be much shorter than the first year in the programme. Although we do not release results of research-based testing, we do send each school a copy of the assessment report created by the SFU student who is tutoring each child and a summary of each child’s progress over the three weeks in the summer.

Helping us communicate with your child’s teacher and the principal of the school your child attends. Many principals and teachers are not familiar with our summer programme and we hope that you will help us by informing them about this website and about the programme.
