EDUC 852: Education & Dramatic Art: Performative Inquiry Across the Curriculum

Educational Insights

Educational Insights is a peer-reviewed open-access electronic journal sponsored by the Faculty of Education, at the University of British Columbia. Our location however, resides in the practices, theories, ambitions and dreams of our Editorial Circle, who are scholars and educators from across Canada, and into the United States.

The Editorial Circle, curriculum theorists, writers, and pedagogical adventurers, through the editorial leadership of Lynn Fels, are presently repositioning Educational Insights as an innovative evocative provocative intertextual space for engaging in new dialogues and reimagining spaces of pedagogy, inquiry, and interdisciplinarity. Our intent is to encourage a community that honours difference and polyphony, while sharing a vision of pedagogy, education, inquiry as spaces of challenge and hopeful conversations.

Educational Insights originated in 1990 as a publishing venue for graduate students. In 1995, co-editors, Gary Rasberry and David Penberg, moved the journal from hard copy to cyberspace, a decision that anticipated 21st century scholarly representation, communications, and hermeneutic meaning-making. While the initial journal issues were limited to linear text presentation, there is now the opportunity to explore pedagogical and curricular positioning through sound, video, non-linear and performative text.

In celebration of the 25th year of the Centre for the Study of Curriculum and Instruction, Director Karen Meyer proposed that Educational Insights be imagined anew as an international journal open to all scholars whose work encourages new ways of envisioning educational issues, pedagogy, curriculum, inquiry, and interdisciplinarity. Since 2001, editorial guidance has been provided by Lynn who has shepherded the journal into its current position, which includes the publication of action research articles by teacher-researchers in Notes from the Field, exploration of arts in inquiry in Artscene, and an on-line version of Chameleon, a journal of writing for children, published by the Department of Creative Writing at UBC. In April 2007, Poet’s Corner, formerly a section of the journal, morphed into its own journal, Studio (www.studiopoetry.ca).

Current Research Projects

Technology, Performance & E-motion

Hampton Research Grant, University of British Columbia, Vancouver

Collaborative grant: Stephen Petrina, Mary Bryson, Teresa Dobson, Lynn Fels

In a variety of venues that invite the interplay between technology and performance, I am exploring what happens when performers/participants are faced with new ways of engaging in scholarly representation and creative expression through technology.

Community-based participatory action research: Collaborating with women in prison to improve their health

B.C. Medical Services Foundation, Vancouver

Collaborative grant with faculty members of the Faculty of Education and Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Ruth Martin, Principle Investigator.

In this project, women in a correctional centre have formed a participatory action research group. By working together, we are learning to understand what matters in terms of the needs, perspectives, and agency of women regarding their health and wellbeing both within and outside the prison gates. This project calls our attention to new ways of engaging collaboratively.
