Simon Fraser University
Student Information

Simon Fraser University is located on top of Burnaby Mountain in the City of Burnaby. Burnaby borders Vancouver and the University is approximately 20 minutes by car from Downtown. The Simon Fraser University Surrey Campus is located at Central City in the heart of Surrey. Students accepted to the Program will receive practicum placement(s) in the Lower Mainland or Fraser Valley. Students must be prepared to travel a distance to attend their school placements. In addition, some students will be placed in off-site modules requiring little attendance on campus at SFU.

PDP is available elsewhere in British Columbia. Please contact the External Programs office at 778.782.8128 for information. For the Fort St. John based-PDP, please call their office at 250.785.6981.

PDP is completed in 3 consecutive semesters (12 months), full time, and is not available by Distance Education. The Program incorporates practical experience and university coursework, in approximately equal proportions. The approximate cost of PDP is currently $7,200 for the twelve month Program. Approximately one third of the Program fee is due at the beginning of each semester.

All applicants to PDP must be admissible to Simon Fraser University. Contact Admissions in Student Services at 778.782.3397 or visit the Student Services web site for links to admission requirements. Declaring a BEd degree as your goal does not guarantee your acceptance into the PDP.

To meet our secondary level requirements you must have completed one major or two minors in teachable subjects. A major is approximately 15 to 18 hours of lower level coursework (100 & 200 level courses), plus approximately 30 hours of upper level coursework (300 & 400 level courses), all in one subject area. A minor is approximately 12 to 15 hours of lower level coursework, plus approximately 18 hours of upper level coursework in one subject. Please refer to the Simon Fraser University Calendar for specific major/minor requirements of a particular faculty or department.

English is the language of instruction and communication at the University. According to University regulations, an applicant whose primary language is not English must demonstrate a command of English sufficient to meet the demands of classroom instruction and written assignment. Such applicants are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) before applying. See the Simon Fraser University Calendar for more information.

The Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University is committed to increasing the participation in PDP of students from all ethno-cultural/racial/linguistic/sexual orientation and special needs groups, as well as others who have confronted identifiable barriers to post-secondary education.
