Professional Qualification Program (PQP)
The PQP is designed to orient new Canadians or teachers requiring updating to the cultural, social and political contexts of BC Public Schools through a combination of seminar and in-school experiences. It is a 12-month, full-time program based at the SFU Surrey campus. Prospective students must contact the BC College of Teachers to have their credentials evaluated for this program.
Paraprofessional Teacher Education Module (PTEM)
NOTE: This program is currently being revised and will be re-named PROFESSIONAL LINKING PROGRAM (PLP) to accurately reflect its program status.
The Para-Professional Teacher Education Module (PTEM) is a part-time teacher education
program designed for paraprofessionals, student support workers, para-educators (social workers, counselors,
settlement workers), adult educators, independent teachers, Early Childhood Educators (ECE trained teachers) and
trades, technical and Francophone teachers operating on letters of permission. Applicants must have a minimum of
2 years experience in their current roles with preference given to work with children and youth in the public
education system. PTEM is unique in that it offers these workers, who are interested in becoming teachers, an
opportunity to maintain their current positions during part of their time in the program while meeting the
requirements for teacher certification. To accommodate work schedules, this program runs modules in 14 month
and 16 month options. The next two cohorts begin July 2010 (16 students) and January 2011 (16-32 students).

Semester 4 (Spring 2012) Education 405 – full time practicum
PTEM differs from the regular, full time PDP program by dividing the first semester full time course into two 13-week
part-time courses taken over two semesters. This allows candidates to engage in a teacher education program while
also continuing to work part time for at least part of the program. During the part-time semesters students attend
campus-based seminars and coursework during the evenings and weekends while attending to their practice teaching
one or two days a week, depending on whether it is the Summer or Spring PTEM intake.
Organization of SUMMER PTEM:
• Education 402 is taken as campus-based seminars to introduce theory, concepts and methodologies relevant to teacher development. Classes are held 4 days/week, 8:30-12:20 for 6 weeks commencing July 1, 2010.
• Education 403 is taken as a part-time semester and delves deeper into topics relevant to teacher development and explores connections between theory and practice. Campus-based classes are held on weekends with 2 days/week
practice teaching while maintaining 3 days/week work
• Education 405 is the full-time teacher education practicum semester. The PTEM Summer 2010 intake students will take Education 405 in Spring 2011. All PTEM student teachers must arrange with their districts for a full-time leave
of absence for the entire practicum semester of 405.
• Education 404 is taken after 405 for Summer PTEM students. Education 404 can be taken full-time or part-time. All PDP student teachers take a minimum of 15 hours of approved Upper Levels Education coursework in order to complete the Education 404 requirements for certification. Courses can be taken over one or more semesters to
accommodate work schedules.
Organization of SPRING PTEM:
• Education 402 is taken as campus-based seminars to introduce theory, concepts and methodologies relevant to teacher development.
• Education 404 is taken after 402 for Spring PTEM intake students. Education 404 can be taken full-time or part-time.
All PDP student teachers take a minimum of 15 hours of approved Upper Levels Education coursework in order to complete the Education 404 requirements for certification. Courses can be taken over one or more semesters to accommodate work schedules.
• Education 403 is taken as campus-based seminars on topics about teacher development including deeper exploration into theories, concepts and methodologies from 402. Students continue with 2 days/week of practice teaching along with 3 days/week of work and weekend seminars.

Helping Ease Access For Returning Teachers (HEART)

The internship positions vary from year to year, but, typically, we will be looking for candidates for countries in Asia. If interested check with your program coordinator or the coordinator of International Initiatives.
