Professional Qualification Program (PQP)

The PQP is a 12 month program located in the lower mainland. This program supports teachers who have previous teaching experience or qualifications from outside Canada to enter the teaching profession in BC. Prospective students need to first contact the BC College of Teachers to have their credentials evaluated.

Paraprofessional Teacher Education Module (PTEM)

PTEM is designed specifically to allow working paraprofessionals (student support workers) to maintain approximately 80% employment throughout most of the 16-month teacher education program. If you are currently working as a public school paraprofessional, have two or more years experience working with youth and children in school-based settings, and have at least 75 university transfer course credits, or a degree, then you may be interested in PTEM.

Helping Expand Access For Recertifying Teachers (HEART)
Educ 406 Supervised Observation & Teaching

The HEART program supports teachers who need to recertify or acts as a refresher program for teachers who have been out of the classroom for a period of time. This EDUC 406 option within Professional Programs is a supervised orientation/observation and teaching sequence of about 12 weeks in a BC public school. This practicum offers educators, who do not meet BC certification requirements, an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the BC school system and to update teaching skills to acquire certification from the BC College of Teachers. Prospective students are encouraged to contact the BCCT to see if this course of study is right for them.

EDUC 406 is normally offered in the fall and spring terms only and space is limited. Additional information is available in the SFU Calendar or from the Special Programs Advisor at 778-782-8128.

Application forms for the HEART program should be received by: April 15 for fall term; September 15 for spring term. An interview is normally required.

Short-Term International Internships

Professional Programs co-ordinate internship opportunities for recent graduates of PDP in several countries throughout the world. Working with international educational partners, PDP offers graduates short-term teaching experiences that can be combined with graduate and undergraduate coursework. The internship postions vary from year to year, but, typically, we will be looking for candidates for China, Korea, Europe and Australia.

Please note that Special Programs have their own application form and deadlines.
