Simon Fraser University
School Associate Information

What is a School Associate (SA)?

School Associates are teachers currently working in public schools. In Education 401/2 they work with Faculty Associates and their assigned student teachers in "instructional teams" for a period of approximately six in-classroom weeks. For Education 405 or 406, their time and energy commitment extends to the full semester, which includes supporting student teachers in the 6-8 week immersion/practicum.

Many teachers have found the role of School Associate to be a satisfying, rewarding experience and an opportunity to contribute to the teaching profession.

SAs who support the goals of the Professional Development Program play an important role in helping students make meaning of the vast and complex worlds of educational practice.

Tuition Fee Certificates (TFC's)

Simon Fraser University offers teachers, who take on the School Associate role, a Tuition Fee Certificate. This certificate can be applied towards any credit course, graduate or undergraduate, offered by this University. TFCs can only be used for the regular student fee portion and may not be used to cover the premium fee component or extra costs, such as student activity fees, athletic fees or residence fees. TFC's are transferable to administrators and teachers on full-time teaching contracts within the same school.

Using a School Associate/Teacher Certificate to pay tuition

Forward the original TFC (bearing your name) to the Office of the Associate Dean, Administration, in the Faculty of Education at SFU before the second week of the term. The value of the certificate is calculated on the Basic Tuition Fee multiplied by the number of credit hours written on the TFC. The current value of ONE credit hour is $157.30 (Fall 2009).

To use a TFC, School Associates must be admissible to SFU and, therefore, have to apply for admission to the Registrar's Office (see University Calendar for information).

Teachers/Principals may use up to a maximum of 30 credits.

Student (non-tuition) fees are not covered and must be paid separately.

TFC's are posted to student accounts by the end of week 4 of the term. Late submissions will be subject to a 2% per month late fee penalty on the unpaid tuition amount.

Transfering a Tuition Fee Certificate

TFCs can only be transferred to teachers on continuing contracts, or principals, in the same school in which the School Associate supervised a student teacher.

If you wish to transfer a TFC, complete the TFC Transfer Form and forward it along with the original TFC to Leslie Allen in Professional Programs Office, Faculty of Education, SFU.
