A Certification Program for Immigrant Teachers

Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Education and the BC College of Teachers recognizes that teachers who have qualified and practiced outside of Canada have a wealth of experience and expertise to offer our public education system. These teachers have personal and professional resources which have the potential to enrich our profession, in the interests of our students, beyond the scope of teachers indigenous to the region. To welcome these teachers and to include them successfully in the British Columbia education system is the goal of the Professional Qualification Program. We believe that the children of British Columbia would benefit from a teaching population which represents the broadest range of languages, cultures, ethnicities and nationalities.

We recognize that teachers new to Canada require a particular kind of orientation to the philosophies and practices of education in our local schools. In addition, they need sustained opportunities to explore our public school culture. A goal of the Professional Qualification Program will be to assist in the adjustment and acculturation of these teachers to the BC school culture.

It is, therefore, expected that candidates have a level of English competency which will allow them to engage in and benefit from the program activities, and to be able to work with colleagues and students from the public school system.
