Qualifications for Social Studies Majors and Minors
To qualify to teach social studies at the secondary level, applicants must meet two conditions:
- possess an acceptable social science major or minor(s)
- satisfy specified geography (minimum 6 credits) and history requirements (minimum 18 credits)
You must meet the academic requirements to be eligible to apply to PDP at the Secondary level. The specific courses to meet the Social Studies requirements do not have to be completed prior to application to PDP. If admitted to the Program to teach Social Studies you will not be recommended for a Teaching Certificate until PDP and the Social Studies requirements are complete.
Acceptable social science majors/minors
Students may qualify for a teachable major in social studies if they have a designated (or equivalent) major or two minors in a social science area(s). Students may qualify for a teachable minor in social studies if they have a designated (or equivalent) minor in a social science area. A major is approximately 15 to 18 credits of lower level coursework (100 & 200 level courses), plus approximately 30 credits of upper level coursework (300 & 400 level courses) in one subject. A minor is approximately 12 to 15 credits of lower level coursework and approximately 18 credits of upper level coursework in one subject. A completed Masters degree in a social science area may count as the equivalent of a minor.
Majors or minors listed below will qualify provided they have a predominately social scientific focus (and not, for example, a linguistic, literary or artistic emphasis). Other majors or minors may qualify provided they meet three criteria for a social studies designation:
- the program teaches a methodology for conducting social science inquiry;
- the coursework addresses a number of topics specifically mentioned in the secondary social studies curriculum;
- the program provides a broadly applicable perspective or orientation to the teaching of the secondary social studies curriculum.
