Academic Requirements

Elementary Level

You are eligible to apply after you successfully complete:

  • A minimum of 76 semester hours of courses acceptable for credit at SFU*
  • 2 English (minimum of 3 credits of English Literature)**
  • 1 Canadian History
  • 1 Canadian Geography
  • MATH 190 (Principles of Mathematics for Teachers) or equivalent
  • 1 Laboratory Science
  • 1 Education Course ***

To help you with your selection, we have provided a chart of acceptable courses offered by Simon Fraser University and other B.C. post-secondary level institutions, that will satisfy our prerequisites. Applicants who have not completed the above requirements by the application deadline will not be considered.

 

* If you enter the PDP without a degree, upon successful completion of the PDP you will be recommended to the BCCT to receive a Conditional Certificate. You will then have 5 years to complete your degree. Upon completion of your degree you will be upgraded to a Professional Certificate.

 

** French Literature and Composition may be substituted for applicants to the French language PDP, however this option may prohibit completing a B.Ed as a second degree within PDP. Please contact PDP Admissions for more information - 778.782.3620.

 

*** The Education course does not have to be completed prior to application to PDP. If admitted to the PDP you will not be recommended to receive aTeaching Certificate until PDP and the additional education course requirement is complete.

Secondary Level

You are eligible to apply after you successfully complete:

  • A Four year degree (including a teachable major subject or two teachable minor subjects)
  • 2 English Courses (minimum of 3 credits of English Literature)*
  • 1 Education Course **

You can apply while these courses are in progress, however students from other institutions must complete their degree one full semester before beginning PDP. Simon Fraser students must have completed their degree requirements before beginning PDP. The only exception to this would be a Simon Fraser University Bachelor of Education applicant who requires PDP to complete his or her degree.

 

All applicants must complete the English requirement at least one full semester before beginning PDP.

 

The Teachable subjects are:

  • English
  • World Literature
  • History***
  • Geography***
  • Mathematics
  • Biological Sciences
  • Earth Science
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • French
  • Music
  • Art

 

Additional teachable areas are available within PDP, but must be combined with another teachable area:

Fine & Performing Arts are only available in the September intake.
