The Professional Development Program (PDP) is a twelve-month teacher-training program divided into 3 semesters. The program includes practicum experiences and professional coursework integral to the understanding of important educational ideas and their application to classroom practice. When students complete the program they are recommended to the British Columbia College of Teachers to receive a BC Teaching Certificate.
PDP is strictly an online application. We offer January and September admission to PDP and the deadline dates for registration can be found on our website. There is a $55 charge for the online application.
PDP is NOT available by distance education.
The approximate cost of PDP is currently $8000 plus books for the twelve month Program. Approximately one third of the Program fee is due at the beginning of each semester.
When you have completed the online application and hit the submit button you should receive a message that tells you that your application has been submitted successfully.
All supporting documents must be received in the PDP Admissions Office Room 8624, Faculty of Education, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby BC, V5A 1S6 no more than two weeks after the deadline. Documentation submitted after this date may result in a rejection of the application as incomplete. A cover letter is not part of the application process.
We will still have your file if it has not been more than two years since you last applied. We can use the supporting document you previously submitted but do require a new PDP application, application fee, updated resume, written assignment, at least one updated reference letter (you may submit up to three new reference letters), and transcripts for any courses completed since you last apply to PDP.
If you need an evaluation of your transcripts you can mail or fax (778-782-5323) them to the PDP Advisor. Make sure you include a cover letter stating whether you are interested in Elementary or Secondary, any questions you may have, and your e-mail address.
The gradepoint average is based on your last two years (approximately 60 credits) of undergraduate coursework. Applications below a gradepoint of 2.5 (on a 4 point scale) will not be considered.
Yes, please see our chart of acceptable courses.
Approximately 3.5 months after the application deadline.
Students accepted to the Program will receive practicum placement(s) in the Lower Mainland or Fraser Valley. Students must be prepared to travel a distance to attend their school placements. In addition, some students will be placed in off-site modules requiring little attendance on campus at SFU.
PDP is completed in three consecutive semesters (12 months), full time. The Program incorporates practical experience and University coursework, in approximately equal proportions.
All applicants to PDP must be eligible for admission to Simon Fraser University: consult students.sfu.ca for links to admission requirements.
No, once you are given a student number from SFU it is your number for life.
Declaring a B.Ed degree as your goal does not guarantee your acceptance into the PDP.
