Faculty member receives two prestigious honours

Dr. David B. Zandvliet

David B. Zandvliet received honours from the Association

for Community Education and Learning Environments.

 

Dr. David B. Zandvliet, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University, received a Certificate of Recognition from the Association for Community Education in British Columbia in May and was honoured with the 2005 award for Best Published Paper from a Learning Environments special interest group of the American Educational Researchers’ Association in April.

 

Dr. David B. Zandvliet, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University, received a Certificate of Recognition from the Association for Community Education in British Columbia in May and was honoured with the 2005 award for Best Published Paper from a Learning Environments special interest group of the American Educational Researchers’ Association in April.

 

David received the Certificate of Recognition for his outstanding service, support and leadership in the development of community education. David worked extensively at the Bowen Island Community School contributing to curriculum development, co-leading class field trips and assisting teachers with their professional development related to environmental education. His work at the school has led to the development of a research agenda on place-based models for science and environmental education funded with a NSERC Crystal grant.

The 2005 award for Best Published Paper was presented to David during the American Educational Research Association conference at the Learning Environments SIG Business Meeting on April 10, 2006 in San Francisco. The paper, entitled “Physical and Psychosocial Environments Associated with Networked Classrooms”, was a study of the information technology rich settings in Australia and Canada. Focusing on physical and social aspects of the learning environment, his paper explores the links discovered between them and their impact on learning in an education setting.
