The Faculty of Education, in partnership with the Department of Women’s Studies and the Department of Sociology & Anthropology, is sponsoring a unique colloquium series titled “Women, War and Peace”, situated in the armed conflict in Sri Lanka. Organized by the Education Graduate Students’ Association the series features eminent South-Asian feminist scholar Dr. Neloufer de Mel, who will give two talks, one on peace pedagogy, and the other on the female suicide bomber. She will also screen a short documentary film, Women by the Sea, on the impact of the catastrophic 2004 tsunami for women in the affected areas.

 

Dr. de Mel is professor of English, and a faculty member of the postgraduate program in Women’s Studies at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. She is currently a Ford Global Associate at the Five College Women’s Studies Research Center and a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow at Yale University.
