Little did Bill and Dolores Bliss know that a PDP certificate would take them on such a long and winding road – and one that would eventually end back on the hill.  While Dolores knew she wanted to be a teacher by the time she was in high school, she had no idea that the education she received at SFU would lead to work as varied as setting up a community daycare in Southbank B.C., teaching elementary school in Kamloops,  developing and teaching a parenting and life skills program at the College of New Caledonia in Burns Lake as well as developing a program to create awareness of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Bill’s career took an equally diverse path that began with work as a behavioral therapist with autistic children, then as a CN police officer, a Brink’s armored car driver, a kindergarten teacher, a college instructor, a suicide prevention worker and family care worker with Northern Native Family Services, a city councilor and a health food store owner – 16 professions so far!

It was Bill and Dolores’ interest in healthy lifestyles that led them to open up their Nature’s Garden Deli and Restaurant at SFU’s Cornerstone building. Now in it’s 3rd year of operation, business is starting to take off.  So much so, that the energetic Bill is already envisioning partnerships with various faculties to create awareness campaigns on smoking, healthy living and breast cancer.  When asked about the myriad of pathways his career has taken, Bill claims it’s always been about education.

“Having a teaching degree doesn’t limit you to teaching, it allows you to do so much more because a lot of jobs simply boil down to educating people, whether it be products or anything else”.  Though it’s been 35 years since the pair graduated, it seems their varied careers have brought them full circle – back to where it all began and a lifelong passion for teaching, in it’s many different forms.
