The public imagination tends still to regard “post-secondary” education as equivalent to university degree programs, a perspective also common among some parts of the public university and college sector. However, the demand and market for education services is now very diverse and global in scale, while the expectations of students for environments to support their learning projects have changed in major ways. The day of the captive student is coming rapidly to an end, a trend with positive and negative significance for education.

McLaren looks at the trends for the future development of a learning society in B.C. and how might we succeed in truly fostering a knowledge economy in this province. He will also reflect on the results of the Campus 2020 process.

McLaren is a professor emeritus in the Faculty of Education at SFU and an adjunct professor in the School of Environment and Sustainability at Royal Roads University. He continues to work extensively in the field of education technology, science education, environmental education, curriculum development and instructional design, and organizational development and is currently a cohort supervisor for SFU’s Ed.D. program. McLaren also along with Gerri Sinclair, and Michael Griffin was involved with the Campus 2020 process and examined the future potential of e-Learning in the post-secondary System.
