International Languages and EducationApril 19, 2007
The Faculty of Education is leading an academic forum on the role of education in sustaining miniority languages in Canada. The academic forum is a centerpiece of the national conference "International Languages and Education: Access, Equity and Inclusiveness", which aims to raise national awareness to the importance of recognizing minority languages in mainstream education in Canada.
A key aim of the conference is to address the intellectual development, social, cultural and economic risks of dwindling minority language programs in Canada. More than 30 workshops will be held during the conference on issues such as teaching minority students in regular schools, the role of culture and language in child development, and the pros and cons of standardized testing. Professors from Simon Fraser University, University of Toronto, and University of Calgary will be presenting at the academic forum. A positioning paper will be prepared from the presentations and discussions during the forum and will be forwarded to provincial and federal government representatives.
