Simon Fraser University
2nd Cohort of Masters of Education: Curriculum and Instruction in Imaginative Education Graduates

October 05, 2007

2nd cohort of M.Ed. students

Mary, Caitlyn, Lisa, Nicole and Gillian celebrate the completion of their Masters of Education program
at Horizon’s Restaurant.

The newest masters of imagination made their final presentations this past summer and all received a thumbs up. The presentations, projects, and papers were as diverse and interesting as the cohort: elementary and high school teachers; alternate, aboriginal, and special needs educators; and, nursing and college educators.

After two years of classes studying alternative methods of teaching from educators and educational theorists from around the world, individual attention from superlative professors, and exposure to imaginative and thoughtful scholarship, the cohort is prepared to initiate and sustain educational change each in their own unique way. Some are continuing on to doctoral work, others will work with SFU’s Imaginative Education Research Group (IERG), while others will return to teaching, energized and equipped with a new vocabulary and understanding with which to communicate an engaging and effective way to teach.

Caitlyn James, who worked as a teacher while completing her M.Ed, has already seen results in the inner city youths she works with. Working at an alternative school gives James the freedom to try different approaches and Imaginative Education is “totally successful” she says. “When I use the Imaginative Education techniques, the kids are engaged and when you understand what is engaging for the average mind in this age group, you can develop the tools that help develop students’ cognitive skills.”  Other comments received by Dr. Kieran Egan, one of IERG’s directors, are as enthusiastic about the theory itself, as the professionalism of those teaching it.

Congratulations to this group of interesting masters of imagination who will be convocating this October: Elizabeth Baker, Baljit Lail, Brenda Point, Lovey Sidhu, Sue-Ellen Logue, Nicole Thibault, Caitlyn James, Mike Parker, Gillian Bateman, Mary M, and Lisa Loewen.
