John D. Dennison, University of British Columbia
Summer Institute Speaker: John D. Dennison Topic: Post-secondary education in British Columbia over five decades – The search for status
Date: Tuesday, July 3, 2007 Time: 4:00 – 5:00 pm Location: SFU Burnaby campus, Room SSCB 9200
The primary focus of this discussion will be the development of post-secondary education in British Columbia since 1960 as the public system grew from one institution to over 30 throughout the province. Emphasis will be placed upon diversity, access, and quality as institutions sought greater status by offering more and more advanced credentials. In the process the meaning of the terms “university” and “degree” have been eroded to the point where public confidence has deteriorated. As a result an increased emphasis upon quality and institutional accreditations is recommended.
