
STUDENT RECOGNITION
Sarah Hickinbottom received this year’s Dean’s Graduate Convocation Medal in the Faculty of Education. The medal recognizes a student who has achieved the highest level of academic excellence.
Education graduate student Kumari Beck is this year’s recipient of the Douglas Ray Award from the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CIESC). The award recognizes “outstanding research in the field of comparative and international education” with the purpose to facilitate communication about that research and encourage high-quality research by graduate students. Tim Wineberg, a PhD student in the Faculty of Education is a winner of this year’s Canadian Association for Teacher Education (CATE) Dissertation Award. Wineberg successfully defended his dissertation “Enacting an Ethic of Pedagogical Vocation: Pursuing Moral Formation in Responding to the Call of Sacrifice, Membership, Craft, Memory, & Imagination” in January 2006. Wineberg’s senior supervisor during his doctoral study was Peter Grimmett, Director-at-Large in the Faculty of Education.
Anne Bonnycastle has received the Dunlop Thesis Award for her outstanding master’s thesis.
FACULTY RECOGNITION
Phil Winne will receive the Robbie Case memorial Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Educational Psychology in Canada. Winne is a Canada Research Chair in the Faculty of Education, and
Kau’I Kellipio and Paul Shaker have been recognized with honours by the Association of British Columbia Deans of Education (ABCDE). Keliipio, a program coordinator in Professional Programs and special advisor on Aboriginal education in the Faculty of Education has been awarded with the Teacher Educator Award. The award recognizes her work over the past 35 years “as a teacher, school administrator and teacher education in support of Indigenous/Aboriginal peoples and their education.”
Shaker, the Dean of Education at SFU has been recognized by the ABCDE with the Media Contributor Award for his efforts in raising public awareness about education issues. Over the years, Shaker has worked with local and national media and support community events and dialogue related to public education.
JUNE CONVOCATION
Congratulations to all 216 students convocating from the Faculty of Education this June. The ceremony will take place on Friday, June 8, 2007.
