Education Conference June 2007

(L-R): Jan Walls, moderator; Jim Cummins, University of Toronto presenter; Ian Andrews, Simon Fraser University host; Roumi Ilieva, Simon Fraser University presenter; Davit Watt, University of Calgary presenter.

During the 2007 National Conference on International Languages and Education: Access, Equity and Inclusiveness, the message was clear: there needs to be a national effort made to encourage the retention and learning of ethnic languages in Canada. The conference itself aimed to raise national awareness to the importance of recognizing minority languages in mainstream education in Canada.

The Faculty of Education led the Academic Forum during the conference where three scholars, Roumi Ilieva of Simon Fraser University, David Watt from the University of Calgary, and Jim Cummins from the University of Toronto, presented their research and expertise on the language and education issue.
