The Faculty of Education was honoured recently for its positive contributions and service to the South Asian community.

Vaisakhi, considered one of the most important Sikh festivals, celebrates a time to rise above prejudices and join together in the unique celebration of life. At the recent Vaisakhi Gala 2008, hosted by Ethnicity at the Surrey Convention Centre, the Faculty of Education was recognized for its Service Learning approach to teacher education. Dean of Education, Paul Shaker, was honoured with a turban tying ceremony at the gala.

Speaking at the event, Paul, one who believes in the essence of community service spoke about the significance of service. At the gala six other organizations were also honored and recognized for their community service. Kanwal Neel, Program Coordinator at SFU, said, “As well, his involvement with the turban tying ceremony reflects his focus on diversity and the importance it plays within the community. In his speech, he noted that service was a selfless act without a motive in mind, and that one needs to let go of their ego to bring good into the community.”

Service Learning is a method of teaching that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, encourage lifelong civic engagement, and strengthen communities for the common good.

The Faculty of Education is involved in many aspects of Service Learning. Such involvement includes students volunteering in a reading program to help kids in the community, giving leadership in sporting events, participating in cleaning up the neighborhood, and traveling abroad to volunteer their teaching services or giving supplies to children in need.
