Simon Fraser University SFU and Cuba: An ongoing relationship

SFU student teacher Arielle (R) and her Cuban student teacher partner, Adrien, with grade 7 students.

The Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University continues its strong academic relationship with Cuba through collaborative initiatives.

The French Module in Professional Programs sent another group of student teachers to Santa Clara, Cuba for the third consecutive year of the project. The student teachers spent one month teaching Core French in Fe del Valle Middle School in Santa Clara, as well as contributing to the French classes at the Felix Varela Pedagogical Institute, our partner university in Santa Clara. All future language teachers from Felix Varela are expected to be trilingual (Spanish, English and French) so the opportunity for both Canadian and Cuban student teachers to practice their language skills is always one of the focuses of the project. This project is the only one of its kind in Cuba, the only one to have Canadian student teachers do a practicum in Cuba, and the only one en français.
