Simon Fraser University THE CRAIG NEWELL MEMORIAL MATHEMATICS EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

Gail Newell (L) and Craig Newell (R)

The Craig Newell Memorial Mathematics Education Scholarship was initiated by Craig Newell’s widow, Gail Newell, to commemorate Craig’s lifelong work and interest in mathematics education. Craig Newell, who was a Ph.D student in mathematics education at SFU, passed away on March 27th, 2008 due to esophageal and stomach cancer. His lifelong passion for mathematics and education inspired his students to be able to not only do math, but also love it. Many friends and colleagues remembered his encouraging mentorship, intellectual engagement, and excellence in teaching.

“My husband still had so much to give to students and other teachers and was most pleased that his passion for math would be continued. This legacy means that we can continue to support in a practical way the betterment of math education by supporting those who will provide leadership in math education,” says Gail, who has generously contributed to establish the scholarship.

Dr. Paul Shaker, Dean of Education and a donor to the scholarship, describes Craig as someone who has inspired, taught and touched all types of people with whom he came in contact. “His loss was felt by students, faculty, family and friends because of the light and charm he brought into their lives,” says Dr. Shaker. “We miss him and wish to remember him by helping tomorrow’s students.”

Gail’s gift has been matched by Craig’s many family, friends, staff and faculty members to create a $15,000 fund. In order to establish the scholarship as an endowment to support mathematics education graduate students in perpetuity, the Faculty of Education needs to reach a minimum of $20,000. Depending on how soon the fund reaches its target, graduate students may have the opportunity to be eligible for this scholarship as early as 2010.
