A writing community of graduate students is budding in the Faculty of Education. The second issue of the SFU Educational Review, the peer-reviewed and peer-edited open access journal of the Education Graduate Student Association (EGSA) will be launched on April 30th.
The SFU Educational Review makes use of the latest developments in on-line publishing technology to showcase the diversity of scholarship emerging from the Education With/Out Borders Symposium, the annual conference organized by the EGSA.
“This graduate student initiative presents an opportunity to move graduate students in our Faculty ahead of the pack,” explained Mark Weiler, a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Education and Co-Director of the Review. “These early, formative years of the SFU Educational Review are the first steps in establishing the Review as an important publication in the field of education.”
This year’s issue is something to celebrate. With seventeen reviewers moving seven articles through the editorial process, the 2008 edition of the Review is an incredible accomplishment in graduate student academic work. With text-based articles, artistic works and a documentary montage, the Review moves across educational borders while also engaging in the time-honoured practices of academic scholarship and publishing such as peer-review.
A faculty-wide invitation is extended to all to attend this catered event:
To mark the launch of this year’s Review, the EGSA will also present a panel discussion on the trials and travails of graduate students becoming published authors in a peer-reviewed academic journal. The emcee for the event will be Charles Scott, PhD candidate and Editor of this year’s issue.
Presenters include:
Dan Laitsch, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education Editor, International Journal of Educational Policy and Leadership
Johanne Provençal, PhD candidate, Faculty of Education Executive Director, Canadian Association of Learned Journals
Several published graduate students in the Faculty of Education
Join us to celebrate the 2008 edition of the Review and take part in a discussion about how to plan your future as a published scholarly author.
The SFU Educational Review would like to acknowledge the on-going support of the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Education, the Graduate Programs Office of the Faculty of Education, the SFU Library, and the Education Graduate Student Association.
