Programs and Projects

Four broad research/scholarly activities are centred around the Institute for Studies in Teacher Education (ISTE):

  1. the cross-Canada Major Collaborative Research Initiative (MCRI) looking at the impact of policy on conditions of teaching and learning;

  2. the re-visioning of PDP into a teacher education program that reflects the state of the art curriculum and makes provision for a concurrent program through direct entry into Education,

  3. a review of the accreditation of teacher education programs in Ontario carried out by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), and

  4. an investigation of teacher education governance by professional bodies in an era of standards-based reform.

Projected Activities

The primary focus of ISTE will still be on research and scholarship. The current activities will continue for the next two years at least. In addition, ISTE will begin again to sponsor Faculty seminars and scholarly conferences, such as the conferences on teacher development organized by the current Director in 1991, 1994 and recently in 2006 to celebrate 40 years of teacher education at SFU. Moreover, there will be considerable collaboration in the next three years with the Centre for the Study of Teacher Education at UBC, the Canadian Association for Teacher Education currently headed by faculty members at UVIC, and the Center for the Study of Teaching and Policy (CTP) at the University of Washington. Together, we plan to organize regional conferences for the West of Canada and the Pacific North-West to address vital questions and issues of teacher education policy and practice. The purpose of such collaboration is to set up longitudinal and groundbreaking research projects that cause teacher educators to look to SFU as one of the primary places for leading-edge research in this important field.
