2013 Summer Institute Theme
Focused on change and improvement in educational systems at all levels (from early learning through post secondary and adult learning), the conference is open to SFU graduate students and faculty interested in education issues, as well as the broader body of education stakeholder groups in BC, including teachers, instructors and administrators (at all levels), trustees and elected officials, parent groups and education activists. Members of these groups will be invited to present at and attend the conference, which will also be open to the general public.
This conference provides an opportunity for SFU students and faculty and general conference participants to:
Experience rich diversity in theory and practice related to teaching, learning, and leadership in both K-12 and post-secondary environments;
Network with and learn from both academics and research practitioners in focused and enlivened forum;
Review and discuss high quality graduate level research;
Improve their practice; and
Build stronger relationships with community and stakeholder groups.
The theme this year is "Engaging the Mosaic," which is intended to explore the following questions:
What do we mean by student engagement?
Why is there a renewed focus on engagement in both K-12 and post-secondary sectors?
What level of student engagement do we typically see?
How can it be improved?
In examining these questions we want to ensure that the diverse backgrounds, interests, needs and abilities of students are considered - hence the notion of the Mosaic.
