The Master of Education in Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language (TEFSL) provides an exciting and in-depth professional, scholarly, and cultural experience for its students. It has been designed specifically for international students who teach English or wish to teach in English in their respective countries.

English language teachers and specialists will develop and increase their understanding of educational issues and practices specific to TEFL/TESL while studying in a multicultural environment.

The program involves coursework in current theories of curriculum and instruction, as well as, practical field experiences to observe teaching practices in Canadian classrooms.

This framework will enable students to apply new understanding to the development of ideas and strategies in their own or other EFL/ESL professional environments.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

Term 1 Summer Session July – August

  • 5 week intensive orientation

Term 2 Fall September – December

  • EDUC 835-5: Introduction to Educational Discourses and
    Practices in North American Contexts
  • EDUC 811-5: Fieldwork 1 (observations in Canadian classrooms)
  • EDUC 824-5: Seminar in Second Language Teaching

Term 3 Spring January – April

  • EDUC 820-5: Current Issues in Curriculum and Pedagogy
  • EDUC 856-5: Sociocultural Perspectives on Education and Identity

Term 4 Summer May – August

  • EDUC 812-5: Fieldwork 2 (further experiences in classrooms)
  • EDUC 825-5: Second Language Acquisition and Schooling

Term 5 Fall September – December

  • EDUC 883-5: Comprehensive exam

The Comprehensive Examination in the last term consists of the development and presentation of a project that synthesizes the knowledge and experiences students obtain throughout the program.

In addition to required courses, students may take electives with permission of the instructor, senior supervisor either by auditing or for credit from the following graduate courses with the Faculty of Education:

  • EDUC 816: Developing Educational Programs & Practices for Diverse Educational Settings
  • EDUC 823: Curriculum and Instruction in an Individual Teaching Specialty
  • EDUC 830: Implementation of Educational Programs
  • EDUC 833:  Social and Moral Philosophy in Education

They may also elect to take other undergraduate courses with permission.

Throughout the entire program, cultural and academic advising and support are available to students.

Program Prerequisites:

Applicants must have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a field related to Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language
  • A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.
  • Three letters of reference
  • Official transcripts, accompanied by a degree certificate
  • Letter of intent
  • English language competency through the achievement of a satisfactory score on TOEFL or IELTS
  • A successful oral interview with a SFU representative
  • Resume

Program Format:

The Master of Education in Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language (TEFL/TESL) is a 17-month (four term) program that begins in late July each year with an intensive five-week introductory course entitled Introduction to Educational Discourses and Practices in the North American Context.

The introductory course will cover educational topics, as well as, focus on academic literacy and cultural adaptation to Canada. This course continues through term one. There are eight required courses in the program. Course offerings are subject to minor changes.
