Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL) MEd, MA

This program is designed for teachers working with English as additional language learners in public schools, as well as those who teach English as an additional language to adults. The program will provide students with advanced knowledge of theoretical, research and practical issues in teaching English language learners. Courses are offered in the late afternoon/evening during most terms.

 

The MEd program consists of 30 units of course followed by the MEd comprehensive examination.

 

The MA consists of five required courses (25 units of course work) followed by the Master's Thesis. After successful completion of three courses including at least two core courses, students admitted to the MEd program may, on the recommendation of their senior supervisor, in consultation with cognate faculty, and with the approval of the Graduate Programs Director, transfer into the MA program.

Program Application Deadlines:

Next admission deadline is January 31, 2012 for a September 2012 program start. Online application system is open from November 15, 2011 until January 31, 2012.

Program Prerequisites:

A Bachelor degree with a standing of a 3.0 CGPA (or B average) will normally be required for admissions.

An Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (such as BEd/BA with Education or Linguistics (majors/minors) with relevant education and/or linguistics courses such as upper level Education course(s) in language arts, reading or language acquisition; Linguistics course(s) in syntax, phonology, or semantics.  In addition, an English language competence as outlined in Graduate General Regulation 1.3.12 and some teaching or equivalent  experience.

Program Format:

This program is designed to offer flexibility for students by holding most classes in the late afternoon/evenings. Classes tend to be held on our Burnaby campus.

Tuition is reduced to $814.50/term from the 7th term onwards for Master's students. All other costs remain the same each term.
