Curriculum & Instruction: Imagination and Cultural Inclusion (Prince Rupert/Terrace) MEd

This program will be held in Prince Rupert/Terrace, BC.

This program leads to the Master of Education (MEd) degree and is intended primarily for teachers and educators working in settings with significant numbers of Aboriginal/First Nations students (both K-12 and adult).

  • Designed and offered in collaboration with northern Aboriginal educators, school districts, and communities.
  • Grounded in research, theory, and practice stemming from the LUCID* research partnership, which aims at building imaginative, culturally inclusive approaches to teaching the mainstream curriculum.
  • Focused on expanding repertoires of principles and strategies for engaging all students in learning.
  • Provides a framework for collaborative, participatory action research that aims to benefit northern schools, districts, and the communities that they serve.

Throughout the program, there will be a consistent emphasis on the integration of theory and reflective inquiry with practice, and on connecting the academic curriculum with the imaginative worlds and lived experiences of students and communities.

The MEd is awarded to students who demonstrate:

  • The systematic acquisition and interpretation of a significant body of knowledge necessary for advanced professional practice.
  • A detailed understanding of applicable methods for research and advanced academic enquiry.
  • The ability to conceptualize, design and implement a research program for the generation of new knowledge that will satisfy the highest standards of academic and professional review.

Program Application Deadlines:

MEd programs are generally offered for admission in the Fall with application deadlines in March. Please visit our site again soon for information regarding application deadlines.

Program Prerequisites:

Applicants must meet SFU master's admission requirements.

  1. A bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 from a recognized university, or the equivalent. In exceptional cases, where the applicant has followed an alternate educational path that the applicant has extensive experience in an educational or professional setting.

  2. Submitted evidence that the applicant is capable of undertaking advanced work in the area of interest. This is usually judged from letters of reference from qualified referees and an academic writing sample.

  3. Several years of exemplary and varied educational and professional experience, preferably in the area of interest. Of particular value will be evidence that the candidate manifests an interest in the study of the human mind in its cultural and historical contexts.

Students whose native language is not English may be required to satisfy the University and the graduate program committee as to their capability in English (i.e. TOEFL / IELTS scores).

Program Format:

The Master of of Education (MEd) program is designed for practicing educators in the K-12 and post secondary systems. This two-year degree in Curriculum and Instruction, offers the opportunity to obtain a high quality Masters degree in your local community through a schedule geared to the working professional.

  • Focused on improvement of practice through the study of educational theory, philosophy and practice.
  • The program is co-designed so as to flexibly accommodate the demanding lifestyles and schedules of today's educational professionals.
  • Cohort-based with seven 5-unit courses over six terms.
  • Each summer term, students will take a three-week course in July.

Tuition is reduced to $1292.35/term from the 7th term onwards for MEd students. All other costs remain the same each term.
