What this program is about...

This Master of Education Cohort program is designed to attract teachers working with English as second language learners in public schools, as well as teachers of English as a second or foreign language to adults whose interests are primarily pedagogical. The program will provide students with advanced knowledge of theoretical, research and practical issues in teaching English language learners. Courses are offered in the late afternoon/evening during most semesters.

Which prerequisites are necessary...

A Bachelor degree with a standing of a 3.0 CGPA (or B average) will normally be required for admissions.

 

An Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (such as BEd/BA with Linguistics/Education majors/minors) with relevant linguistics/education courses such as upper level Linguistics course(s) in syntax, phonology, or semantics; Education course(s) in language arts, reading or language acquisition. In addition an English language competence as outlined in Graduate General Regulation 1.3.12 of 2007-2008 SFU calendar and some Teaching experience or equivalent

 

How the program is structured...

Degree: MEd (Comprehensive Examination)

 

The program consists of 35 units of course work and a comprehensive examination. All students must complete the four core courses and choose at least three courses from a list of electives (see below).

MEd Comprehensive Examination

A final comprehensive examination normally will consist of at least two but not more than four parts; (a) a paper (b) an analysis of a previously developed portfolio (c) an oral examination on a topic provided to the student when the examination is issued or (d) a mix of these formats.

What financial support is available...

Outstanding applicants may be offered financial assistance in the form of an entrance Graduate Fellowship in the amount of $6250. Applicants should note, however, that the number of such fellowships is limited. Additional financial resources can include scholarships and bursuries as well as part-time employment as a teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA). Tuition is reduced to $782.80/term after 6 terms for Masters students and 8 terms for PhD students. All other costs remain the same each term.
