NEXT ADMISSIONS DEADLINE IS JANUARY 31, 2010 FOR A SEPTEMBER 2010 PROGRAM START

What this program is about…
In exceptional cases, when no regularly offered master's program can accommodate special interests, an applicant may propose a unique curriculum called an Individual Program.
Which prerequisites are necessary…
A Bachelor degree with a standing of a 3.0 CGPA (or B average) will normally be required for admissions.
How the program is structured…
Degree(s): MA (Thesis); MEd (Project)
The Individual Program must include a minimum of 30 semester hours of course work plus EDUC 881-5: Master's Project for a Master of Education (MEd) degree, or 25 semester hours of course work plus EDUC 898-10: Master's Thesis for a Master of Arts (MA) degree.
Individual Program applicants must submit an Individual Program Study Plan that clearly and thoroughly describes:
- the inquiry to be pursued for the master's project or thesis,
- 700 and 800 numbered courses proposed and their sequence (please note carefully any prerequisite courses),
- a rationale for how the proposed courses contribute toward the master's project or thesis
- the program may contain a combination to a maximum of 10 semester hours of course work in Directed Readings and/or Fieldwork courses.
- an explanation of how the applicant's interests are not met by a regularly offered master's program.
The Individual Program Study Plan must be developed with and approved by a faculty sponsor who automatically becomes the senior supervisor of the master's project or thesis. A letter of support from the senior supervisor is required. A second person suitably qualified in relation to the project or thesis joins the supervisory committee normally before the completion of the fourth course in an Individual Program.
An Individual Program Study Plan signed by the applicant and the faculty sponsor must be completed as part of the required admissions documentation. Please consult the list of faculty members showing areas of research interest and discuss your program with the appropriate faculty member. Be prepared to provide an indication of academic performance at the undergraduate level to the faculty sponsor.
It is important to note that the signed Individual Program Study Plan is a contract with Graduate Programs that governs the applicant’s program. A "Changes to Individual Program Study Plan" form must be completed and forwarded to the Graduate Programs office. Any changes from the approved Individual Program Study Plan must be discussed with and approved by the senior supervisor/director.
In addition to other criteria considered for admission, the Director of Graduate Programs or designate will adjudicate the Individual Program Study Plan regarding availability of resources to support it and whether it can be completed in reasonable time.
How to apply for admissions…
Online application system open from November 15, 2009 to January 31, 2010
What financial support is available…
Outstanding applicants may be offered financial assistance in the form of an entrance Graduate Fellowship in the amount of $6250. Applicants should note, however, that the number of such fellowships is limited. Additional financial resources can include scholarships and bursuries as well as part-time employment as a teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA). Information on graduate financial aid and other useful links are available at the University's main information source for graduate students,
