New Students: Getting Started

SFU computing IDs are for SFU continuing students. Therefore, you need to be admitted to SFU and accept the offer of admission by paying the admission confirmation deposit first.

New Students: Computing ID And Computer Access

Once new graduate students pay the $250 Admission deposit, they will receive an email informing that their SFU Computing account is available. You can then activate your computing ID via the mySFU Account Activation service. If you have not received this e-mail, please call the SIMS help line at 778.782.3230.

How to activate your account:

  1. Go to https://my.sfu.ca/cgi-bin/WebObjects/mySFU.woa/wa/AccountActivation
  2. Select "First time Activation"
(If you are a returning student, please select "Returning student".)
  3. Read the Terms of Use and click "I Agree".
  4. Enter your 9-digit student number and your birth year/month/date. Click "Submit".
  5. Create your own password

If you have a problem activating your computing ID, call the Academic Computing Services (ACS) 24 hour help line at 778.782.3230 or e-mail help@sfu.ca.

If you need further assistance, SFU's IT Services site provides basic information about SFU's computing facilities.

Your SFU computing account gives you access to all personal academic program information, course enrollment and grades, financial account information, tax receipts and other student services, many Internet services, including: electronic mail, web browsing, netnews, library catalogues, and library services (including Telebook) at SFU and elsewhere, plus hundreds of file archive sites where you can obtain free software. You also require an account to access SFU's computing facilities and the Internet from home.

Additional assistance is available through the Centre for Educational Technology (CET) located in the Education Building, room 8501.

Registration

Please Note: Your student financial account MUST be in GOOD standing ($0 balance). All prior tuition and fee assessments must be paid prior to enrolling. Spring 2010 registration via goSFU begins Monday, November 9, 2010. If you have trouble registering, you may contact the SIMS (goSFU) Help Line by calling 778.782.3230 or e-mailing gosfu@sfu.ca.

EdD students self-register each semester with the exception of the following courses:

Simon Fraser University is on a trimester system. Therefore students register three times/year. Graduate students must register every semester from admission until all requirements for the degree have been fulfilled. This includes students who register On Leave. A student who does not register is considered to have withdrawn from the University (Graduate Regulation 1.4.3, Simon Fraser University Calendar).

Current Fees and Account Balance

You can check your current fee balance via GoSFU.

Universal Transit Pass

The UPass office regulates and has authority over all transactions related to this program. Please note: if you apply for exemption from the UPass (i.e. you live outside the GVRD), fees are first applied to your account and later reversed. Students who wish to apply for an exemption must fill out the exemption form and request a verification letter from the Graduate Programs Office (Surrey). Visit the website for detailed information and the exemption form. Deadlines apply for exemption requests (please see the UPass website).

Graduate Student Health Care Plan (SFSS)

The Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) recently approved a graduate student health plan. The total cost of $127.66 for both Dental and Medical will automatically be added to your student fee assessment and must be paid at the same time as your tuition, if opting out it will be reversed. If you already have suitable coverage, you can apply for exemption (this is a one time opt out procedure). Visit the SFSS web site for detailed information and the exemption form. Deadlines apply for opting out of the benefits plan (please see the SFSS website).

New Students: Library/ID Cards

Available from the Student and Registrar Services front counter at the campus you will attend class. Please visit the appropriate campus web site for full access details. (i.e. If you are a new student taking your program at SFU Surrey, you must get your Library/ID/Access card at Surrey because it also provides access to the campus.
