Sorphorn Yim
Vancouver Cohort, 2006
Sorphorn Yim brings a unique international perspective to the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program. Born and raised in a Southern province of Cambodia, Sorphorn moved to Vancouver in 2006 to pursue his studies in the EdD.
While in Cambodia, Sorphorn held a number of Senior Administrative positions among which included: a lecturer of English at Royal University of Phnom Penh's (RUPP) Institute of Foreign Languages, Deputy Head of the Department of Media and Communication at RUPP, Quality Assurance Officer at RUPP's Quality Assurance Unit, and most recently Deputy Director of Continuing Education Centre at RUPP. He was also a Fulbright scholarship grantee for his Masters' Degree earned from Ohio University in the States.
Entrusted with the responsibility of developing new instructional mediums to increase access to higher education in Cambodia, Sorphorn's area of research explores the use of distance education and how this can be enhanced to facilitate adult education and community economic development. In a time when Cambodia is moving ahead and away from its torturous and painful past of the Khmer Rouge regime, Sorphorn's contribution to this reconstruction process is quite fitting. Sorphorn is also well travelled and has lived and studied in the US, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, and Canada.
Sorphorn, now a Doctoral candidate, reckons that, "The EdD program typically facilitates the learning process by making connections among theory, research, and practice developing a broad and integrative perspective on inquiry". He admits that this process has substantially changed the way he approaches his professional practice. Furthermore, in a much broader context, faced with such an enormous task of restructuring components of Cambodia's higher education system, Sorphorn finds that belonging to a cohort also provides opportunities to engage with others in the field, as well as fostering the spirit of sharing and caring which is integral to one's overall success.
