Simon Fraser University is a relatively young institution, having been created in 1965 - with the Faculty of Education as one of its founding faculties. Graduate studies in the Faculty of Education began with an innovative set of master’s programs, which then expanded in the 1980s to include a PhD program with specializations in Instructional Psychology and in Curriculum Theory and Implementation. Since that time we have expanded our specializations to include Arts Education, Mathematics Education, Educational Technology and Learning Design, and Philosophy of Education.
Master’s programs in the Faculty of Education are of two types.
MA and MSc degree programs signify the acquisition of advanced knowledge in a field of specialization and competence in conducting significant and original research in education. MEd degree programs are designed as professional degrees with a focus on advanced knowledge and training in educational practice. All programs require prescribed course work and conclude with a master’s thesis (MA/MSc) or comprehensive examinations (MEd). Course requirements for master’s degrees vary by program.
We are proud of the achievements of our accomplished graduates. Our graduate alumni hold a variety of important positions including tenure-track positions in a number of universities in Canada and internationally as well as leadership positions in the public education system at the K-12 and post-secondary levels. Our faculty prides itself on a close relationship between faculty and students, both within courses and as part of the supervisory process. We also have a very active education graduate students association that plays a major role in the lives of our students.
In regards to financial support, most of our MA, MSc, and PhD students will be awarded a Graduate Fellowship (present value $6250) during their studies. In addition, all PhD students are entitled to a President's Research Stipend on completion of their course work and comprehensive examinations (present value $6250). Students may also obtain employment as a sessional instructor, teaching assistant, tutor-marker (for distance education courses), or research assistant. In 2005/6, the average annual income provided by the university through a combination of employment and fellowships/scholarships for doctoral students in Education was approximately $13,000. In 2005/6, annual financial support for MA/MSc master’s students amounted to $250,000, an average of approximately $2000 per student.
Our founding motto at Simon Fraser University is "Nous sommes prĂȘts" and indeed, we are ready for you.
