The Faculty of Education at SFU is a global education leader engaged in research and scholarly inquiry, committed to advancing knowledge and dedicated to improving the practice of teaching and the learning experience.

Our Research

Our diverse community of scholars and educators endeavours to promote innovation in the way teachers teach and learners learn. Our faculty members are recognized for their work in developing, advancing and enacting knowledge that makes a difference in public education. Throughout our 40 years of history, we have grown and evolved in response to the ever-changing challenges and needs of our constituencies. We follow a rigorous research program to investigate theory and provide innovative leadership in issues of educational pedagogy.

Our Programs

We are conscious of the needs of our students and the expectations of our community, locally, nationally and internationally. To provide the most intimate and responsive programs, we have evolved the following program areas, each with its own unique organizational structure:

  • Undergraduate Studies comprises a solid core of coursework designed for students and prospective teachers to explore questions and issues in education.

  • Professional Programs sponsors the critically acclaimed Professional Development Program (PDP), a full-time three-semester program, comprised of an artful blend of professional coursework and practical classroom experience; inquiry, reflection and dialogue are at the heart of our work. Successful completion of the PDP leads to recommendation to the British Columbia College of Teachers for a BC Teaching Certificate

  • Graduate Studies in Education offers programs designed for individuals seeking to expand their knowledge, enhance their careers and work with exceptional faculty.

    • Graduate Programs are designed for scholars, professionals and researchers and include a strong learner-focus, which allows students to pursue the highest levels of excellence in scholarship, research and teaching.

    • Field Programs offers inservice professional development for BC school teachers and administrators in areas of professional development such as literacy, numeracy, technology, diversity, fine arts, French education (FSL and French Immersion) and PE, to name a few.

  • International Opportunities provides both credit and non-credit programs for international and domestic students in conjunction with the program areas of international programs and relations. The unit support students and faculty when they internationalize their activities.

Our Global Community

The Faculty of Education’s unique reputation is based on our close collaborations and partnerships with school districts, administrators and governments to facilitate knowledge sharing. Our community partnerships will continue to be a priority as we expand our work throughout British Columbia, across Canada and around the world.
